A cottage above Mussoorie recently got a wave of attention for appearing in an Indian web series. The building’s real story is older, and more interesting, than its screen time.
Jharipani Castle sits in the hills above Dehradun, built during the British colonial period. It still carries the bones of that era: stone walls, pitched roofs, and the kind of quiet that modern hill-station construction has mostly lost.
Why the location is the real story
The castle sits on a ridge roughly 7 km from Mussoorie’s Mall Road. That distance is not a drawback. It is the whole appeal. Mussoorie’s centre is crowded, noisy, and increasingly built up. Jharipani is far enough from all of it to feel like a different, older version of the hill station, with valley views on both sides and very little around it.
This is a pattern worth learning as a traveler: in most popular hill stations, the good stays are not in the centre. They are on the ridges and slopes a few kilometres out, where the crowds thin and the views open up.
The cafe that became a draw
Inside the property, the Musafir Cafe has become an attraction of its own. Mountain-facing seating, simple food, and an atmosphere borrowed from another decade. It is the kind of place that photographs well, which is part of why the property gained attention, but it also works simply as a quiet place to sit with a coffee and a view.
What kind of stay it is
Modest, not luxurious. The appeal is the setting and the history, not five-star facilities. If you are going to Mussoorie and want the hill station without the congestion of the Mall Road, this side of the ridge is where to look.
What to know before you go
The best months are March to June and September to November. The monsoon can make the approach road tricky. Mussoorie itself is roughly 290 km from Delhi, a 6 to 7 hour drive.
