It was built by antique collector and businessman Nandan Kudchadkar, who spent over thirty years gathering the collection. The museum spans roughly 13,000 square feet across five themed rooms, and it holds glass vats, bottles, chalices, and distillation equipment from the 15th and 16th centuries, sourced from India and around the world. Some of the objects are older than the countries whose drinks they once held.
At the heart of the collection is feni, Goa’s cashew-based spirit. There is a feni cellar where you can sample feni dating back to 1946, and one room recreates an old Goan taverna, the traditional local pub. The museum is not a static display; every tour ends in a guided tasting of feni-based cocktails, with drinks built around local ingredients.
There is a fact about feni that most visitors do not know. In 2013 it earned a GI (Geographical Indication) tag, and in 2016 Goa officially declared it a “heritage spirit,” legally placing Goa’s local drink in the same protected category as Champagne and Scotch. The museum exists, in part, to tell that story: that Goa’s relationship with alcohol is a matter of craftsmanship and culture, not just nightlife.
